USA Today is reporting that a plot to destroy data at Fannie Mae was uncovered and is being prosecuted. In this case it was a fired employee named Rajendrasinh Makwana. His plan was to insert a virus to attack and destroy data at the government chartered mortage lender.
We have discussed in a previous post in this blog that the threat from within is as significant as, or possibly even more significant, than any other threat to data security. We know what the common warning signs are, and in this case, it looks like either the attack was preempted or the systems were resilient enough that the atack did not create significant damage.
Given the credit crisis and the current situation at Fannie Mae, these would seem to be vulnerable times.
But while Fannie Mae is otherwise in the midst of a difficult time, we must offer our congratulations to Fannie Mae for a good result in protecting data. Well done.
