And then there is the more common scenario. Social network Magnolia is reporting on their home page today that they have lost their data and are working around the clock to recover but anticipate the outage lasting at least several days.
And to be sure, the consequences of Mangolia losing its data are far less severe that what might have happened at Fannie Mae (see my previous post), but to those who built Magnolia and work for the company, I can only imaging how difficult this is.
If the data is not recovered, surely jobs will be lost. And this is hardly a good time to lose a job. Even if the data is recovered, I would suspect that the impact on Magnolia’s revenue stream and its growth will not be positive. Again, the result could be lost jobs.
While we certainly wish for the best outcome for Magnolia, we wonder how many young businesses are in similarly exposed conditions. The cost of being properly prepared is not significant. It is not even close to the cost of insurance for property and casualty or liability. Yet the risk is so much greater that a system will crash or become corrupted through one of so many means.
Being prepared is easy and cost effective. And there are quite a few providers, have a Google for: Offsite Data Storage.
