Disaster Map Database

Disaster Database | Global Data Vault

Global Data Vault's Disaster Map Database is designed to assist in the process of making a risk assessment for organizations and individuals based on U. S. State and County location. The data was compiled from FEMA Presidential Disaster Declarations from January 1, 1999 through October 20, 2009.

Data and Use

Each state map in our collection provides a means to assess the relative natural disaster risk in every county in the state. The color code table shows which areas have the lowest to highest risk of natural disasters based on the frequency of Presidential Disaster Declarations over a 10 year period from 1999 to 2009.

For our purpose, a county is included in the disaster if it was designated by FEMA to receive either a) Public Assistance (assistance to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities) or b) Individual Assistance (assistance to individuals and households).

Sometimes counties are added to a declaration sometime after the initial list is specified. We only count the counties which were included the original declaration because we believe these most clearly identify the geographic area at risk for future similar disasters.

Under each map we also provide a table showing every Disaster Declaration for the state in the 10 year period with the date of the event, the FEMA Declaration Number and the type of event. The Declaration number is a link to the detailed map of that event as provided by FEMA.

Note that the maps we offer in the drill downs were developed by FEMA and include every county from the final list of counties impacted.

Future enhancements to this database will include county-by-county drill down to listings of only the disasters effecting that county and the ability to filter the data by disaster type.

Every effort was made to represent the data accurately. There are some small errors in the FEMA source data which we did not correct because we do not have the required data.

Global Data Vault's Disaster Map Database is under construction and will be updated weekly until completion. Thank you for your patience.
