File Locations

The following information will help you in understanding what data needs to be selected to backup and how to find that data when using Global datavault's backup solutions. When creating your backup set you will be prompted to select the information you would like backed up. There are a few ways to do this.

Complete Data Selection

By clicking the check box next to the C: Drive, you will automatically select everything within the drive. Keep in mind that this drive contains many files not needed for backup and could possibly cause issues in the way the backups run. To be able to backup correctly using Complete Data Selection you must exclude these files from your backup set:

C:\Windows
C:\NTUser.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\(Specific User)\NTUser.dat

Custom Data Selection

In a custom Data Selection you can select the data you want backed up by going into specific files in the backup set and manually select only files needed. The following programs have specific files you would want backed up. Here are a few examples of commonly selected files and their directories:

My Documents Folder

By default, data files created by many programs, such as Microsoft Office applications, are saved in My Documents. To select this simply select the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\(Specific User)\My Documents

The most common data files are .DOC, .XLS, .MDB, .RTF, and .PPT

Outlook stores email, calendar, and contact information in a single file. This file is by default found in C:\Documents and Settings\ (USER)\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook or
C:\Documents and Settings\ (USER)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Backup any files with the extension .PST

Outlook Express stores each email folder in separate files. By default, it is found in
C:\Documents and Settings\ (USER)\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express or
C:\Documents and Settings\ (USER)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Backup any files with the extensions of .DBX such as Inbox.DBX and .WAB such as addresses.WAB

QuickBooks data files are stored by default in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks
Backup files with the extension of .QBW you may also need to backup extensions .QBA and .TDB

Quicken data files are stored by default in C:\Program Files\Quicken
Backup files with extensions of .QDF, .QSD and .QEL

Peachtree data files are by default in My Documents or under C:\Program Files\Peachtree
Backup files ending in .PTB

TurboTax data files are by default in the TAX01 or My Document folders. Backup files ending in .TAX

Clubtec data files are stored by default in C:\Program Files\Clubtec\CTC
Backup files with the extension of .BAK

CYMA data files are stored by default in C:\Program Files\Cyma\Cyma4
Backup all files in this directory.

Microsoft Money data files are stored by default in My Documents.
Backup all files with the extension .MNY

Tracker data is by default in C:\Program Files\Tracker.
Backup everything within this directory to backup Tracker

Goldmine stores data in separate folders backup all the following directories:
C:\Program Files\Goldmine\Common
C:\Program Files\Goldmine\GMBase
C:\Program Files\Goldmine\Reports
C:\Program Files\Goldmine\Templates
C:\Program Files\Goldmine\Speller
