Oh what a night!

Oh what a night!

2018 was our best year ever! We are closing the year with a 45% increase in growth, and that’s very much in thanks to a great partnership with Veeam. As such, it seemed only fitting that we celebrate with our Veeam friends by helping to host the Veeam Tempe office holiday party last week. The night was filled with dancing, lots of laughter — and a little friendly competition in the way of a gingerbread house decorating contest. Check out the video highlights from this very fun evening.

We didn’t want to miss a minute so we had a great photographer help catch all the moments. The full collection of photos can be found on our photographer’s, Shannon Williams, website (and available for download).  Also thanks to the team at the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix-Tempe ASU Research park for providing a great menu and staff to help us celebrate. We can’t forget to thank our awesome DJ Jimmy Davenport with Starz Entertainment for spinning the tunes.

As we head into another year, we have as much to look forward to as we have to be thankful for.

Cheers to a great 2018 and an even better 2019!

Network System Failure Cost Southwest Airlines $82M

Network System Failure Cost Southwest Airlines $82M

Network system failure is no fun for any business, but it can be especially painful for major airlines. The outage that hit Southwest Airlines on July 20 2016 is a case in point. The disaster caused the cancelation or delay of more than 2,000 flights. The estimated price tag o is pegged between $54 and $82 million in increased costs and lost revenue — and that does not take into account the PR nightmare and loss of goodwill. Worst of all, the disaster could have been avoided had the airline taken crucial precautionary action.

Faulty Router

Southwest is blaming a faulty router, which it says prompted a widespread network system failure; a technology crash pegged as the worst in the airline’s history. The reservation system was knocked offline, planes were grounded across the nation, and the outage took four full days to resolve.

Fallout included:

  • $25 million: Missed bookings, canceled flights, refunded tickets, vouchers
  • $57 million: Worker overtime, stranded traveler and crew expenses that include meals and hotels
  • Customer dissatisfaction and loss of trust
  • Employee headaches and loss of faith
  • Southwest Airlines Pilot Association disgusted enough to demand the ousting of Southwest CEO Gary Kelly and COO Mike Van de Ven

The Solution

A major complaint from the pilot association and mechanics union was the airline’s spending too much of its record-breaking profits on buying back shares and not enough on updating technology. And technology is exactly where the solution lies, specifically with DRaaS, or disaster recovery as a service.

While your company may not be on the same scale as Southwest Airlines, an outage within your enterprise would be equally crippling and expensive to daily operations. Companies that invest in DRaaS can enjoy the industry leading Veeam Backup and Replication solution that delivers powerful, affordable and easy-to-use data protection for Hyper-V and VMware. Benefits include rapid image-based backups, integrated offsite replication of images to secure data centers, flexible and fast recoveries, tested, zero point RTO – and protection against disasters such as the one suffered by Southwest.

Are your customers, employees and peace of mind worth the investment? Protect your company with Global Data Vault.

What is Veeam Backup

What is Veeam Backup

Veeam Backup and Replication

Backup and recovery solutions are vital to your organization, but backup solutions that used to work effectively may no longer do the trick in today’s ever-changing computing landscape, especially if your firm relies heavily on virtualization. Veeam backup offers backup and disaster recovery solutions that make an ideal fit in the virtual environment.

Backup Solutions That No Longer Work

Tape backup has been a longstanding solution.  Tape restores take far longer to complete when compared to a restore from disk – or the even faster alternative – using the backup as the primary. That’s not even possible with tape.

Tape solutions mean that finding the data always means finding the right tape. That’s time-consuming and risky. Plus, with tape there is the risk of obsolesce of the media when the tape software or drive gets upgraded. Finally, tape solutions simply cannot provide the guaranteed availability that every modern business requires.

Enter Veeam for the Virtual World

Veeam works in the virtual environment by backing up virtual machine images instead of files, storing the images in a secure, central location. If disaster were to strike, the VM images could be rebooted nearly instantly, rapidly restoring the machines with a recovery time and point objectives of fewer than 15 minutes for all data and applications.

How Veeam Works

Veeam’s software runs through what is called a hypervisor, which is a layer of software that allows for multiple VMs to be run on a single, physical machine. Veeam’s first task is to take full backup of each virtual machine. It then subsequently uses caching and duplication elimination processes to only store new information in the VM images.

Veeam Benefits and Options

The Veeam Availability Suite provides five main capabilities. They are:

  • Rapid recovery: Choose exactly what you want to recover and how you want to recover it.
  • Avoidance of data loss: Near-continuous data protection coupled with streamlined recovery methods
  • Verified recoverability:  Veeam stands by its ability to recover every application, file or virtual machine, with no exceptions.
  • High visibility: Receive alerts and enjoy continuous monitoring to become aware of issues before they can affect operations.

The Veeam Availability Suite combines two products into a single solution: Veeam Backup & Replication for restoring and replicating information and Veeam ONE for monitoring and reporting. A smaller version of the Veeam Availability Suite, known as Veeam Backup Essentials, is available for smaller businesses that may not need the suite’s full capabilities.

Headquartered in Switzerland with main offices in Ohio, France and Australia, Veeam was founded in 2006. It has since become the go-to backup and recovery solution for more than 183,000 customers across the globe.

Takeaway:

Whether you are a small business or enterprise data center, Veeam Backup offers a cost-effective solution for backup and recovery in virtual environments. Veeam Backup enables you to protect virtual environments, physical servers and their workloads, and even physical workloads.
