Global Data Vault FAQ

Who is Global Data Vault?

Global Data Vault (GDV) is a managed solutions provider of disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS),  backup-as-a-service (BaaS), and Office 365 Backup headquartered in Dallas, TX.

Why should I choose Global Data Vault?

Global Data Vault is a platinum Veeam Cloud Service & Service Provider, which is the highest tier awarded. Veeam Software is known for its reliability, functionality, and ease of use. GDV believes that not all cloud experiences are the same, and we put the customer service, quality, and security aspects as our focus.

What does [THAT] mean?

It's true. There are a lot of DRaaS and BaaS terms that are not everyday expressions. If come across a term you do not understand, you may find it explained in our DRaaS glossary.

What is the best storage for your backup?

In the IT world, how we talk about storage can be in a variety of contexts. Storage is both a qualifier and a quantifier, in that it can be both a type and a quantity. You may speak of your brand of storage appliance(s) or devices, the type of disk, or the amount of disk space available. For example, ‘this Dell server has 400GB of flash disk space and 4TB of SAS’ indicates two different sizes and types of disk storage. However, over the last 10 years, storage has become more and more of a commodity item, with many manufacturers offering similar features. Budget-conscientious buyers often look for the best deal and are not as concerned with keeping homogeneous storage brands in the infrastructure.

What is Veeam Backup & Replication?

Veeam Backup & Replication is software that delivers availability to all cloud, virtual, and physical workloads. Veeam is known for reliability, ease of use, and lightning-fast restores. It provides application-consistent, image-based backups and replicas of VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines, block-level backups of physical workloads, and SaaS workloads such as Office365. It allows for Instant Recovery of any workload into vSphere, as well as patented Instant VM Recovery, SureBackup, and SureReplica.

What is Veeam Instant VM Recovery?

Instant VM Recovery is the technology that allows one or multiple VMs to be powered on directly from a backup file without the need to restore it first. This allows for extremely quick recovery for even the largest virtual machines.

What is Veeam SureBackup and SureReplica?

SureBackup the ability to verify any backup for complete functionality. Either manually or automatically, the virtual machine (VM) is mounted directly from the deduplicated, compressed backup file and powered on without network connectivity. This guarantees recoverability of an entire VM, not just a file. SureReplica performs a similar function by powering on replicated VMs to ensure functionality but without network connectivity to avoid conflicts.

What is Veeam Cloud Connect?

Veeam Cloud Connect is a major enhancement introduced in Veeam Backup & Replication version 8. Cloud Connect provides SSL VPN connectivity from customer to cloud repository and enables more efficient structuring of remote repositories in our data centers.

What are Veeam Agents?

For virtual machines and workloads, Veeam is agentless. Veeam Agents for Windows/Linux/UNIX are pieces of software--used to back up physical workloads including workstations and laptops--that integrate with Veeam Backup & Replication. Veeam Agents also allow for Cloud Connect functionality for remote workers or sites.

What is Veeam ONE?

Veeam® ONE™, part of Veeam Availability Suite™, provides comprehensive monitoring and analytics for your backup, virtual and physical environments. With support for Veeam Backup & Replication™ and Veeam Agents, as well as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV, Veeam ONE delivers deep, intelligent monitoring, reporting and automation through interactive tools and intelligent learning, identifying and resolving real customer problems before they begin.

What is a Veeam Backup Proxy Server?

The Veeam Backup Proxy is a data mover. It is an architectural component that sits between the backup server and other components. It handles deduplication, compression, encryption, and the transfer of data from production storage to backup or cloud repositories or storage for replicated virtual machines.

What is a Veeam Backup Repository?

A Veeam Backup Repository is the storage location where Veeam backups are created and held. Global Data Vault customers will have a backup repository on-premises and a cloud repository in a GDV data center.

What is a Veeam Backup Copy job?

Veeam Backup Copy Jobs copy backup files from one repository to another. A copy job is what sends backup data from your on-premises repository to Global Data Vault via Cloud Connect.

Do you support the free version of Microsoft Hyper-V Server (or the free version of VMware vSphere ESXi)?

Working with Veeam Backup & Replication, we support all versions of Hyper-V. For VMware backups, Veeam Backup & Replication uses the vSphere APIs for Data Protection (VADP), and VMware does not enable these APIs in the free version of ESXi.

Can Veeam Backup Physical Servers?

Veeam Software, a leader in Cloud Data Management, and the pioneers of instant virtual machine recovery, provides the recovery solutions you need. Veeam started as a virtual-only solution but began offering agents for physical servers in 2017. Veeam has been able to restore any Veeam agent-based Windows into Hyper-V for a time now, but with Veeam Backup & Replication v10 released in February of this year, any Veeam-based backup of a workload can be restored as a VMware vSphere virtual machine.  Read more...
